Mbombela offer explanation for bad pitch

Posted: 31 January 2013 Time: 10:25 am

Mbombela Stadium Manager Roelf Kotze says the reason the pitch has been unplayable is because of extreme bad weather conditions in the area recently.

Located in Nelspruit, the stadium is in the spotlight after teams that played there during the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations group stages slammed the "sandy" pitch.

Togo captain Emmanuel Adebayor had some strong words last night on the state of the pitch, saying: "To be honest with you I'm very sorry but it's a disgrace for our continent to be playing on this pitch when it's on TV around the world."

READ: Adebayor: Mbombela pitch a disgrace for Africa

KickOff.com contacted Kotze, who explained why the pitch is in a shocking state.

"We had 250 mm of rain on December 28 so there was an algae outbreak which is difficult to control chemically. Now, the problem is you can't treat that drastically with chemicals because you don't want to kill your grass," he says.

"So they had to use other methods by first of all mechanically trying to remove some of the algae by raking the pitch and secondly, by placing loose sand on the pitch so that dries off the algae. But just after that they had another 250 mm of rain so that made it 500 mm of rain over a short period. All of that contributed to the outbreak of algae," he says.

"So now the main concern that the players had after playing here was because of the loose sand on the pitch and the reason the sand was there was to try to contain the algae.

"So what has happened is that last night after the match [Togo vs. Tunisia], all the loose sand has been manually removed from the pitch to expose the grass up to the normal level," Kotze continues.

The next match at the stadium will be Togo against Burkina Faso on February 3 in the quarterfinals and Kotze has allayed fears that the pitch may still be unplayable.

"We are confident that [removing the sand] will strengthen the grass… They didn't have much time to do this because we had double headers, but because of the break now the pitch manager will now be able to present a much better pitch by Saturday.

"It is the same company that always works on the pitch and they are doing the best they can under the circumstances," he adds.

Thanks for the explanation, but don't the stadium have drainage system to channel rain water like other stadiums, in Dbn we had 300mm rain and the stadium remained in good condition. Now I suspect that some of the features in these stadiums are just a saying, only to be tested to see they are not there. Drainage system is a must to every world class stadium.

These games cant be moved. Municipalities have already spent a lot on the preparation and the Provincial departments have spent money. So moving a game wont help the Municipality to re-gain their expenditure. If they fail to do so, the the Auditors will slam the Municipality for waist of money. Thanks for the explanation, i think we were all worried about the state of the pitch because we know Mbombela is not a bad pitch at all.

Some are telling us about their European masters and some are telling us about their premature ejaculation in the tournament while we know that they were given a dubious penalty in the same tourney and the still failed to make it while Burkina Faso bleksemed some team by 4 goals at the same stadium.

Moving the game away from Mbombela is not possible, this is an official tournament, the biggest in the continent... there are consequences and relevant reasons not to move, consider these

=cities had to bid for hosting these games, and thus their local municipalities had to budget for the games
=local people benefit economicaly from this games in their city, tough one
= people have budgets too, the cost of bookings for hotels and stuff like that
=teams have camps there, optional but will need reimbursement if they were to move to another city, plus they have booked facilities in the city, so other parties are involved

There could be many reasons why the games may not be moved to Polokwane or any city!

South Africa is home to most of the blue chip companies and system updgrade do not happen overnight. Remember IT system run the business so its upgrade need careful and slow changes. In the last ICT conference held in Cape Town in November 2012 old IT infrustrcuture is a challenge to many African countries.

Rwanda and Maritious are the only countriies that have advanced IT system. Minister of Commucation has recently singed off the Digital migration IT system and it should be implemented soon. All our school will be equiped with WIFI. All RSA teachers will be given Laptop and Classes equiped with Projectors. So RSA is moving away from paper and boards teaching into complete technology.

Fact RSA remain a African Economy Powerhouse.

About the Mbombela pitch, a lot has been said while a lot of reservation has been made. Anyone WHO IS NOT FROM SOUTH AFRICA talking about the bad pitch is quickly reminded that his country has worse pitches. Please be reminded that the location of that pitch is not what made it internationally unacceptable. It is the STATE, STANDARD, LOOK, and FEEL of the pitch that is awful, not the location or country of domicile. Mallam Usman Dan Fodio once said and I quote: “Conscience is an open wound; only the truth can heal it\". Therefore, the so many legions of voices can never suppress the truth. After all the curses rained on others, the condition of the pitch remains the same. Let’s call a spade a spade and not a big fork.
