Moses sends Nigeria through

Posted: 29 January 2013 Time: 09:23 pm

Nigeria are through to the Africa Cup of Nations quarter-finals, after a 2-0 win over Ethiopia in their final Group C match on Tuesday.

Victor Moses scored twice from the penalty spot in the last 10 minutes to send the Super Eagles through.

Nigeria ended in second in Group C, after Burkina Faso and Zambia drew 0-0.

The Super Eagles dominated the first half, as has come to be expected this tournament, but again were unable to make their possession count.

They created plenty of chances, but were not able to turn those opportunities into goals.

Luckily for Nigeria, Ethiopia were as unconvincing in front of goal, creating just one half-chance in the first half, when Saladin Said sent a free header wide of the target.

Efe Ambrose could have headed home from a free-kick early in the match, but sent the ball over the crossbar.

Shortly after, Ikechukwu Uche headed wide after a free-kick from Moses, and a few minutes later Elderson Echiejile forced a save from Ethiopian keeper Sisay Bancha, with a header from a corner.

Just before half-time Kenneth Omeruo had the best chance of the half, as the ball fell at his feet after some confusion in the box, but the defender shot over the bar from close range.

After the restart Omeruo was back in the thick of things, this time with a header on goal, but – again – it went just over the bar.

10 minutes from time Moses was pulled down inside the box by Alula Girma, and coolly converted the spot-kick to put the Nigerians 1-0 up.

Five minutes later Moses went on the counter-attack, and was brought down by Sisay Bancha in the box. The keeper was shown his second yellow card and dismissed.

Ethiopia had made all three of their substitutions, and Addis Hintsu had to take the gloves for Moses’ second penalty. He went the right way, but the ball hit the back of the net and sealed the victory for Nigeria.

Keshi cant bring this team to compose two passes and a nice build up.
Ethiopia gave Niger two CHEAP penalties to help them.
Moses's penalty taking was the most composed thing Nigeria did all game long.
With that kind of display, we are not going far in this tournament.
SIA's team would have destroyed this team in open play.

Nigeria are not just good enough to play Ivory Coast. What I couldn't understand is the fact that Ethiopia are not good in sprinting but still play quicker than Nigeria. What a shame. You have got to play to your strength passing on the pitch is our strength. I don't understand why Nigeria keep playing high balls. Why not play on the ground pass the ball quickly and move forward. Anyway, they have reach the bus stop but It's going to be a shame that Nigeria will be disgraced by Ivory Coast.

Great play by Ethiopian Team. Nigerians were playing a mind game as \"blame it on the poor referee\" . They were just looking for a penalty since they know that they can't score.

The journalist who wrote this article has disgusted me by the way. be it, this Nigerian team is so poor.

Jomo Sono Wase Orlando! You are absolutely right about your comments on what you believe the NFF should do. We have the best youth football system in Africa but it seems that they are not trickling through into the senior team. To strengthen your point, the real problem with Nigerian football is the hiring and firing of football coaches.

Siasia should have been given a chance to prove himself. The Super eagles were scoring goals when he was in charge. The reason why Westerhof and Jo Bonfere were successful was because they were in the job for years. If your team is going through a transition period, you must have a coach for the long haul.

“Mr i have aids kaizer chiefs no:1 in the UK,” it seems you are not happy with life. I don’t know if your parents were killed during the struggle of apartheid or indeed if you are riddled with HIV,

Nigeria and Ivory Coast both stand a 50/50 chance of progressing to the semis. Mark my words, Naija will rise to the occasion. We play according to our opponents, which is our biggest weakness and also our biggest strength. When we play weak teams, we play bad. When we play strong teams, we play well. Strong teams usually defeat us by only a 1-goal margin in tournaments. Check the records. Ivory Coast will not demolish us, I guarantee that.

Where is Zion 2 and all those block-headed morons who came on this site to run their foul mouth over my honest perception of Keshi and his weak team? I want to reiterate what I said in some of my previous postings: Keshi has proved to be the worst thing that happened to the Super Eagles in recent times as far as coaching goes. It is just obvious that he lacks what it takes to coach our great team.

He has weakened our team; killed the esteem of Super Eagles and is on the course to 'temporarily' close the door for better qualified indigenous coaches to handle the Super Eagles. But, that, we will stoutly resist. Keshi was a great player and captain of our team. But, not so much as a coach judging by his records which continues to mount. He has passion for this game. But, passion alone is not enough to transform a former great player into a Jose Murinho who didn't even play the game. So, coaching is a completely different ball game.

The politics and corruption in NFF MUST stop if Nigeria must reclaim its glorious days. It was stupid politics mired in cronyism and camaraderie that led to the unpopular removal of Samson Siasia (who by the way had the support of the vast majority of Nigerians not withstanding the fiasco of 2012 AFCON qualification) and the enthronement of Keshi. Siasia headed the nation and Super Eagles in the right direction. He promised attacking football; and Nigerians got it beyond measures. He brought some discipline into the team ( Osaze and the likes of him were axed): but, irredentist politics and cronyism laced with festering corruption meant that Siasia was pressured to bring him back at all cost. He bent over; but the outcome was costly as Osaze became the catalyst of Super Eagles dismal outing against Guinea where we failed to qualify for AFCON 2012. Surprisingly, the same Osaze was axed by Keshi with no one in the glass house giving a hoot about it.

I use this opportunity to appeal to policy makers in Nigeria to evacuate from any plan to hire a foreign coach for the Super Eagles after the AFCON. Experience has proved that teams that won the World Cup did so due to a combination of reasons that includes having an indigenous coach who is meshed in the dynamics of the local football etc. This is where Samson Siasia fits the bill.

Please, every effort at a replacement for Keshi MUST start and end with him (Siasia) as that replacement. Otherwise, we have other promising trainers such as Oliseh, Iroha and Amunike. Its just a matter of building confidence in them . But, why not Siasisa who has demonstrated his capabilities at global fora and proved that he can do it? Those who judge him with club performance are stupid. If that's the case, what club record does Keshi possess and glossy are his international records? What did Keshi win for any body in any FIFA tournament? That, is the measure comparison. We MUST move away from stupidity this time and get it right just in time before the kick off of World Cup qualifiers. In fact, I expect the NFF to have rounded off plans of announcing a new coach ( Siasia of course) in a matter of days so as to gain some time which is not Nigeria's friend at present, especially, if it plans to be in Brazil 2014 and do well.

This is my honest opinion. Nonetheless, its just a matter of perception for any one to disagree. But, I welcome mature, constructive and courteous dissensions to my views.

Imagine in our second match against Zambia, he didnt even know what to do, he wanted to sub Emenike, it was Amokachi that told him No, before he went ahead and sub Ahmed Musa. Another problem of Super eagles is Amokachi. Amokachi should go somewhere else and stop hanging or lobby around eagles without meaningful impact. NFF should please in JESUS, ALLAH, and all the dieties name hire a foreign coach preferably from South America. The South Americans make, play, and eat football. PLEASE NFF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Enough of this embarassment. Please, do things right for once and your name will be remembered forever. PLease!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I supported him the same way I am supporting Keshi because eventhough its not so rosy now with the way we are wumbling and fumbling we are still getting the needed results. After the nations cup for Nigeria then we can make a decision weather keshi stays or not, but for now let us just continue to support him, Let us talk about the kind of selections or formations Keshi should use against all mighty ivory coast. I am for one happy these is the youngest Squad Nigeria has used in a very long time. Siasia needs another team to proove himself before he can be considered again for Nigerian job in the future.

I dont care if nobody agrees with me so long as you agree that I am entitled to my own opinion.

One more thing @Futbol-Aficionado dont you think its a waste of time hoping that Siasia will come back? You and I know that he's about the best indegenous coach with potentials for silverware in Nigeria today. We know, but does the NFF know it? NO.

We will only be sounding like a cracked record to keep talking about Keshi. I also go with you on your position that no foreign coach should be hired especially for the reasons you gave for it. But I don't see anything wrong in identifying a foreign coach with vast technical indepth to provide technical support to a Nigerian coach and together it will be a eureka formula.

All told, lets keep the faith

Siasia's football was not heart-ache football. There was a pattern. Given more time we would have become a FORCE by now not scared of IvoryCoast. But now we are scared... Siasia defeated Argentina B team. Yes B team 4-1 but Keshi would have drawn against them or even lose the match. Siasia did not lose any match during the qualifier. If he had played away to Guinea with a draw, we would have qualified but nFA wasted time due to politics and Eguevoen lost the match.
Nigeria 2-1 S. Leone

Nigeria 4-0 Ethiopia

Nigeria 3-0 Kenya

Nigeria 4-1 Argentina

Nigeria 2-2 Ethiopia

Nigeria 2-0 Madagasca

Nigeria 1-3 Argentina

Nigeria 2-2 Guinea

Even the last draw vs Guinea was a fantastic match. We created chances after chances. We should have beaten them 5-2. We could not have patience with a better coach now we are giving Keshi that patience that will not yield result. Few Mad people run NFA with some senseless loyalist. Win or lose against Ivory Coast, business man Keshi's time is up. It is clear he has no ideas for this team. We cannot continue to support him while he uses Eagles as his personal academy to sell players to Europeans. Our creative midfielder was Mba. What did he create and Keshi let him play for 90 minutes. NFF should please clear off all of the coaches including the even dumber Amokachi.

I suggest we go for a young coach who likes attacking football and can inspire his charges to greater heights. Roberto Martinez of Wigan comes to mind. He is Spanish, loves African talent and did a wonderful job on nurturing Victor Moses. He should also be allowed to bring his own assistants. I really doubt this NFF would want to work with Siasia again. But Siasia or Oliseh as his Nigerian assistant would be a great asset to the technical team.

I am sorry, at this stage, we have a lot of talents but I do not support doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results. We cannot continue recycling ex Eagles as coaches. They are player agents or easily influenced by the agents of the players they are supposed to be managing. Before hard core Siasia fans cry fowl , please tell me what Solomon Okoronkwo, Isaac Promise and Chibuzor Okonkwo were doing in our national team even when it was obvious they were surplus to requirement. Eguavoen brought a clueless Stanley Okoro and washed up Stephen Sunday into our team. Although Amodu is not an ex eagle, he was also influenced by player agents and his team was just as unimaginative as his boy, Keshi. Amodu could not stop inviting Seyi Olofinjana and Obinna Nwaneri even when we had better options.

One thing most of us agree on,is that we must make a change now. Keshi and his dumb assistants can't deliver a better Eagles than what Siasia had. We have moved backwards with their appointment. We should right this wrong now. Slyman.

@TroyBoateng, trust me we have got better players - Mr Keshi decided to leave them at home in the name of Rebuilding so he can open us up to ridicule from people like you.
Osaze, Martins, Apam, Taiwo, Lukman Haruna , Kalu Uche could easily have changed this team.

Spoton thank you for that comment. Keshi promised that objectivity was the catch word in picking his team and nobody was guaranteed a shirt. We thought that meant everybody had to fight for a shirt, but he did not even invite all those mentioned above plus more quality players. How can you fight for a shirt when you were not even invited. The worst part is that he keeps saying \"Osaze, Taiwo, Kalu Uche and Martins are in my plans\". If they are in your plans when are you planning on using them, after we kick you out of the job? Then he gave excuses for 32 year old washed up Shola Ameobi, who turned his back on him. If Keshi can praise Shola for \"being like a coach on the field\", how can you be mad at Odemwingie for being ambitious and wanting more responsibility as captain of the team. After being a player in a team for ten years, what is wrong in wanting to be the captain? After this Afcon, we need to investigate what transpired between Keshi and Shola. Slyman

It is now ve®y Çlear to the public and nff dat keshi is not a coach buh a business man who wnts to use this opputunity given to him by nff to market players abroad. Accessing our team to dis years afcon u will c dat he lack options and match winners frm d bench. Keshi's team selection is questionable and his decision making is very poor. I was suprised seeing players lyk ejike uzoenyi, gabriel reuben, sunday mba, egwuekwe making our team to afcon wen we hv better and more xperienced options like nsofor, aluko, joel obi, haruna lukman, john chibuike, odewinge and lots more. In today'smatch mba was meant to be our creative midfileder buh was one of the worst performer's in the team along side echiejile and uche. I tot keshi wud hv been reasobale enof to play a two powerful attackers wit a creative winger lyk moses in d match buh he chosed uche ahead of a more agile ideye, uche hv passed his prime and he's very sluggish to my liking. In african football tough and rugged strikers re needed not ball painting strikers. Coming to our midfiled we lack dat creativity and vision and it hurts me dat keshi ignored d services of haruna lukman who could done dat for d team perfectly. Ahmed musa is d biggeste dissapointment in dis afcon bcos I single handedly tipped him to be one of d stars of dis afcon. Playesr dat I miss so much in our team re nsofor, taiwo, anichebe, haruna, odewinge and sone aluko. Keshi shud be sacked immediately even if he gets to d final of dis tournament period cus he is clueless.

I remember when Tijani Babangida turned ur stupid Mc Fish into Mc Meat in the Ghana/Nigeria 200 ANC. I believe Tijani Babangida was older than your useless Mc Meat then (since to u SAs u believe everybody in our squad is old including our coach) and yet Ur useless Mc Meat was used by our old Tijani Babangida and scored a fantastic goal, actually 2 fantastic goals at the expence of Mc Fish or Mc meat.

Nff shud start searching for a sound foreing coach now. Keshi and amokachi re jus ordinary in terms of football tactics. A coach coming to a huge tournament wit mediocre, sick and unfit players in d name dat he is rebuilding? If keshi is gud enof and has coaching acumen he wud hv known by now dat his best attacking options and partners is ideye and emenike whereby ideye will be coming frm d right flank and emenike as he's point man. In our first match againts bukina faso, the pairing of d above namÉd players worked out well. Musa shud be starting frm d bench whÍle moses shud start frm d left flank. Our midfield is our weakest part of d team, y do we so much rely on mikel so much? Ð creative borden is too much for dis young man and he arguably d best midfield player in dis team buh wud hv done better if he had anoda midfield partner who cud help him to anchor play in d middle of d park whereby a player lyk haruna wud hv done dat very well. Nosa is gud buh since dis tournament started he seems confused in d midfield and really doesn't knw his job as an attcking midfielder. Kenneth omeruo hv impressed me so much, naija and chelsea has a defends trojan in dis young chap. He is composed, tackles well and reads d move of opposiñg attackers very well, d future is bright for our defence. Oboabona is also gud buh needs a move to europe to improve his game. Efe ambrose is my man of d match. AfÞa dis afcon if we re trully rebuilding, players lyk uche and yobo shud not come near our national team again so dat d younger generation shud be given a chance. If ke§hi is reasonable he wud hv used dis tournament to xpose sm young gud talents lyk aluko, imoh ezekeil, leon balogun and john chibuike. He shud also search for attcking midfielders afta dis afcon if he will remain as coach of eagles. We hv one of the best attacking midfielder in greece now, he is 19, plays for veria in d greek first division. His name is michael olaitan. Dis player is been monitored by many big clubs in europe and in no distant tym will be moving to olympiacos. If keshi trully wants to rebuild he shud try out such talents in friedly gAmes.

@ Football Africionadio, I'm in support of comment 150%. Sia1 is what we actually need for this tourament. Not Business man Keshi. But hey, I'll still support S.E against CIV tho. Trust me, they are equally as scared as us. They wouldn't like to play us now, just as we are trying to avoid them. Anything can happen, let's keep our fingers crossed and hope for a miracle on sunday. I almost fell asleep watching today's game against Ethiopia. It appears keshi and his squad had no clue what they were doing today, except for a few players with Victor moses, Emenike, and Enyama topping the list of the people that had a good performance lol

Nigeria should pack their bags right now. I said it before the tournament started and I will say it again. There is no way this Nigerian team can beat Ivory Coast in the quarterfinals. We could not even score against Ethiopia, we had to depend on 2 penalties. It's a crying shame.

3 teams were eliminated today. Zambia, Ethiopia and Nigeria.

When I said that most Nigerians are patients of amnesia, some of us see me as being too hash.
Siasia who never know how many goal or results need to qualify to 2012 afcon is thought to be a better coach by this amnesia patients....
Now led be clear, the match against Argentina was one of those match fixed by Asian football gamblers...it is there in FIFA, the draw in Abuja against Guinea was a referee gift, in all fairness we lost that match by 3 goal to 1, as one of our two goals was a claear pass with hand by Eminike to Ike and their third goal had no problem...
Now can we be little fair enough to look at Siasia with all the statistics required? Since he took over the Eagles, as other youth coaches with overlordship mentality, our Rankin kept on dwindling, till date we have not recovered from the 15th position Ahmodu lifted us from... His victory in France over France was a better ranking instrument than the whole result Siasia got in his failed tenure... Those who don't know Siasia will always make noise...
Why is Siasia out of job? Simply because team owners are afraid to have their team relegated as he had done to those teams he had handled...
I think the NFF was right by sacking him because they saw the danger in aloowing a match fixed agent and a pretender as a coach...
Now that Siasia team people talk about was coupled here in Kaduna by the combination of Coach Ganiyu Salami and later Eguavon, today those stupid amnestic supporters of Siasia pretent as if he did not only inherited the team...
In Holand, they have forgotten that Nigeria qualified through wombling and fumbling as best losers, as the third team in the group.... Please leave this Siasiamania out of your brains and focus...though I have just realised that is a waste of time to convince certain virus affected brains...

Azeebi please get your facts straight. You might be the one having amnesia. In 2005 Nigeria finished second in the group behind Brazil. Brazil has 7 points, Nigeria had 4 while South Korea and Switzerland had 3 points each. I don't care about this Siasia argument but if you want to talk about the history of Nigeria, please don't spread false information.

As for FIFA ranking, please learn how the rank is calculated before you blame any coach on the teams position. FIFA takes the past 4 years into account when calculating points. Matches played in 2013 will weigh more than matches played in 2012 and so on. Teams earn more points for playing in tournaments or world cup qualifiers. Friendlies only earn a few points. You can't blame Siasia for the poor position of Nigeria because the 3 years prior to him being coach were also taken into account. You cannot give all the credit to Amodu either for the exact same reason.

Next time know your Football before you say some of us have amnesia. You clearly do not know much about what you are talking about.

It is better to play badly as Chelsea did to win the champions league than to play like arsenal and win nothing in many years.... Siasia supporters are saying we should be like that...
Why will a man be in a system for seven years, yet failed to deliver and relegated his nation to non-qualifying status, then we still consider him best...
This man was in the system from 2004 until 2011 and still failed when it matter most...
The coach who won the only world cup trophy for England is the most criticised up to date...but kept on and at last won..
Which type of foreign coach have we not tried?
Win or lose, this team is better to that, which failed to qualify with favourite coach, favourite players, favourite fans, favourite media and favourite failure...
Statistically, Keshi will be ranked by common sense higher than Siasia, simply because youths football is not and cannot be a base for ranking...more ever, 99% of youths coaches have never produce good results when given full international sides...
Led not play like Arsenal of England and led not expect Barcelona style... It is better to play like Italy or champions league winning team Chelsea paraded last year...
Football is about results based on the importance of the match or statusm you can not play Argentina team D and when faced with team B, you failed then kept on making noise... Why are siaone fans silent about JUTH, Bayelsa, Egypt bound Under 20 and his match fixing scandals? ....why can't they tell us that in two to qualify system, he will have been fired in 2005...as he was only third in Holland...
I am angry with my country men....NFF, FAns, media, etc... Can we ever learn to use records as basis for judgement?

@Naijaboy, thank you for that correction, Nigeria was only beaten by south Koreans not overtaken. Thanks.
But I diagreed with your statement about FIFA ranking: Ahmodu was employed on 28th July 2008n when Nigeria was 34th, by February 2010 when he was sacked, Nigeria had been moved up to 15th in the world. When he left, only four months later we nosedived and in less than a year, we were out of top 40. Was that four years based?
I apologised for that error, due to my own carelessness, but all other information about siaone are basically true...
NaijaBros
posted: 06:56am 30/01/2013
Yes teams can nosedive after some of their points expire. Take Egypt for example, in 2010 they were ranked very high because they won the nations cup in 2010, 2008 and 2006. In a 4 year span, then they took a dip in 2012 because all the points they earned from the 2006 tournament expired. They will also take a dip next year when the points from the 2008 tournament expire as well. The points lose value, current year is weighed 100%. Second year is 50% third and fourth years are 30% and 20%. That means if Nigeria earns 1500 points for 2013. Next year the value of those points will all to 750 and so on.
NaijaBros
posted: 07:09am 30/01/2013
Actually Egypt points from 2008 have already expired so they should've taken a dip. I don't know what they are ranked now but they probably have already fallen.

We also hope CAF will be fair to us, while we admit that the Super Eagle is not good enough for the trophy, CAF should not use that to influence the play on Sunday. This is because they are conterplating cote de voire vs Ghana or South Africa...
We know what our team can do na matter what they are a team for big occasion, and if such surface against Cote de Voire we should not be robbed...this is because CAF is the architech that made us lie second in that group...with the way the two first two games were officiated...

I am not happy with Bafana Bafana either, but i would rather spend my energy on flying my flag rather than blame the individuals.

Coming back to the Nigeria -Ivory Coast game. what a game that will be. Ivory Coast know very well that Nigeria might not be playing like the Nigeria we know but they will underestimate this Nigerian Team at their own peril.

Nigeria has not raised their game since the tournament started, and i still think this is one game which Nigeria will come to the party. I wornt be suprised if this game is decided on penalties.

Naijabros please leave @Azeebi alone. He is really a confused man. I tried debating him last week when he tried to rewrite history by claiming Amodu won 2 bronze medals and a silver at Afcon. He claimed Nigeria was suffering from firing Amodu and if we don't start making the right decisions, we will never be successful as the English. When I pointed out that England has not won anything since the 1966 World Cup they hosted, he tried to deny he ever made the claim.

Please do not waste your time. Next move to expect from Azeebi now is he will go to the dictionary and try to use unrelated vocabulary, while thinking he is impressing you. I don't know why most people that defend Amodu, always come out sounding overtly sentimental, scatter- brained and borderline retarded. I pity Amodu. Slyman
