Bayern Munich to appoint Pep Guardiola

Posted: 16 January 2013 Time: 06:33 pm

Bayern Munich have announced that Pep Guardiola will take over as manager at the end of the Bundesliga season.

It is something of a surprise move for the former Barcelona manager, who had been linked with English Premier League sides Chelsea and Manchester City, and said today that he relished the “challenge” of coaching in England.

“FC Bayern today announces that head coach Jupp Heynckes has decided to retire when his current contract expires on 30 June 2013,” a statement on Bayern’s website reveals. “In his place, the club has appointed Pep Guardiola as head coach for three years from 1 July 2013.”

Guardiola has been on a season-long sabbatical since leaving Barca in May 2012, after winning 14 trophies – including two Champions League titles.

Bayern chief executive Karl-Heinz Rummenigge said: "Pep Guardiola is one of the most successful coaches in the world and we are sure that he can make not just Bayern, but all of German football shine."

Bayern are currently nine points clear at the top of the Bundesliga, and are up against Arsenal in the last 16 of the Champions League next month.

All the best to Pep, it remain to be seen that he is the best manager or Barcelona is a team that any one can coach and achieve.

Imagine Bayern vs Barca in the Champions league. I agree with @Skholo Barca success is based on the system and the quality of players. Infact they can still achieve playing without a coach.

There is no much a difference to the Barca style of play and Bayern's way of doing things. They both tiki taka opponents, so i forsee a bright future for this gentleman.

There is no Messi in the Bayern camp! Success rate for this coach may drop... but he is a brand already, and players need no extra motivation playing under him, which is something to his advantage!

Whoever is saying that Pep is a coward for going to Germany is high on crack, the EPL just like La Liga is a two horse race lately the German league is no child’s play at least there the league is between 4 teams, and besides coaching a team is not child’s play it’s like your PC games that we play it’s very hard to get players to be a unit instead of individuals and that is what Pep did with Barcelona.

Three Individuals proved it's not all about money i.e. RVP when Man City dangled the carrot and he chose poor united, Eric Mulomo Mathoho, when When Motsepe openned his mining briefcase, he chose KC and Lastly, Roman \"Trigger-happy\" Abramovich put all his oil money in from of Joseph GUARDIALO...

I respect these three individuals. Football is not about Money.......Christiano Ronaldo is unhappy at Madrid Royals, because he thinks he should be paid more

I have to disagree with you guys, Pep didnt have the best players when he took reigns at Barca, remember Messi and Iniesta was not a regular under Frank Rijkaard. Pep fired the so-called best players the Fantastic Four (Ronaldo Morreira, Deco, Eto'o Fils, Thiery Henry...So show what best best players you are refering to?
